Walkin' With A Broken Heart is an advanced jazz band arrangment intended to showcase the full ensemble's technical facility. The piece is a medium-up swing tune with plenty of dynamic variation and ensemble highlights to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. There are multiple solo sections in the arrrangment, allowing multiple musicians to showcase their improvisation skills over relatively standard changes. Of note, the bridge of the form has some complex changes, so make sure the solists are aware of their unconventional nature. There are also many semi-to-full band passages, most notably on the interludes between solo sections, the sax soli, the climax of the piece restating the main melody, and the outro with large brass chords and tehcnical sax section runs. The arrangment uses standard instrumentation, with the only point of note being trumpets 1, 2, and 3 having harmon mutes for a solo section background. Lead trumpet range tops out at concert Eb above the staff and lead trombone tops out at concert D above the staff. This arrangment is intended to test the abilities of an experienced ensemble and deliver a high energy performance that puts their skill and technique on full display.
