INSTRUMENTATION GROUPINGS AND VOICINGS:
Time Remembered is scored in 6 voices for a variety of instrument combinations. It can be played with a Clarinet Choir, Double Reed Choir or Saxophone Choir; alternatively, one can mix up parts as needed based on instrumentation and players available. All instrumental parts have been labeled with a “V” number to indicate the voice number. A complete group has all 6 voices represented according to the following key:

V1 (Flute, Oboe1, Clarinet 1, Eb Clarinet, Soprano Sax)
V2 (Clarinet 2, Alto Sax 1, Oboe 2)
V3 (Clarinet 3, Alto Sax 2, English Horn
V4 (Alto Clarinet (Bass Clarinet 3), Tenor Sax 1, Bassoon 1
V5 (Bass Clarinet 1, Tenor Sax 2, Bassoon 2)
V6 (Bass Clarinet 2, Bari Sax, Bassoon 3, Contrabassoon, Contra Alto Clarinet)

The score is rendered in concert pitch for the convenience of the conductor.

The flute is somewhat of an orphan in this arrangement and included for the sake of having all woodwinds represented; however, if one has a Flute and Piccolo, the piccolo can read the Flute part and the Flute can read either of the Oboe parts.

Although this arrangement has been designed for woodwinds, the Voice 4 may be transposed for French Horn to represent a more traditional woodwind quintet/sextet.

PROGRAM AND PERFORMANCE NOTES:

Time Remembered was written originally for the piano by jazz pianist Bill Evans. The original work was a ballad; the melody features use of wide jumps of interval and harmonically passes through the dorian, phrygian, lydian and aeolian modes, using only major and minor chords with emphasis on harmonic extensions of added 9ths, 11ths and 13ths. It has been frequently recorded in the jazz idiom. While the original work is conceived in jazz, this work is more traditional in character; stating the main melody and then transforming it through meter and tempo. The final third of the work ends with original material that follows the harmonic structure of the original.

The beginning of the work is a chorale-like statement of the main melody. Rubato interpretation of the tempo is expected. The ensemble should sustain sonority and intensity, moving together during dynamic and tempo shifts. The character shifts at letter B, changing to 3/4 meter and increasing the tempo. The pulse of this section should be conducted (and felt) in 1 per measure. The melody is traded from the high voice to the very low voice in the second half of the D section. Section E is a fugue that leaves the melody behind but retains the chordal structure of the original, starting with a with the low voices and layering a new voice every 4 measures until F. Section G contains two intentionally dissonant breaks in the middle voices – emphasize and lean into the dissonance for appropriate effect.
