Here is an arrangement of the main theme from Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends (1980s) for viola and piano! Although the music is from a children's show, this particular arrangement is not for the faint of heart, as it is extremely virtuosic and perhaps even impossible to play perfectly! Because of this, it can be used for a fun encore piece, or maybe even just to have fun with friends (like Thomas the Tank Engine!).
I created this arrangement with a certain sound in mind, specifically the large, booming sound of the piano in contrast to the brassy, percussive sound of the viola. Additionally, as the viola tends to lack in sound projection, I thought that it would be appropriate for the violist to take a turn in accompanying the pianist every now and then! The performers should figure out when they are accompanying each other, and adjust their dynamics accordingly (the dynamic markings in the score try to reflect this to some extent). Finally, this piece is almost impossible to play perfectly, especially for the pianist, so it is perfectly fine if some notes end up getting left out while performing! The most important thing for this piece is to create an exciting and fun atmosphere!
