A Sign Of The Times

Libretto by George Macbeth for Anthony Gilbert's opera 'The Scene Machine'. Topical to the period of the premiere (1972), it contains many references to the war in Vietnam etc. The main thrust of the libretto is about how commercialization affects arts. The opera is one of the first to include rock music in a serious context. The choral portion are printed with wide spaces between each word which made reading confusing at first. They are to be read as normal, across...Why they were printed this way is a mystery.
