6. In World War 2, when submarines returned to Pearl Harbor under orders, often a Navy band would assemble on the pier and play a variety of songs for the returning vessel. This included Anchors Aweigh.
7. The poem about the USS Gato accompanying the song is fictitious. The song however, basically follows the story line of the poem. It has the following sections, easily identifiable.
1. Submerging the boat.
2. Leaving port on patrol. (Main march)
3. Engaging the enemy
4. Victory! (with small trumpet fanfare)
5. The quiet of patrol
6. Returning to port mission accomplished (Main march reprise)
7. Tying up to the pier (brass cascade)
8. Anchors Aweigh.
