Movement I. Light by the Light of Music The opening movement of Sonata for Piano: Illuminations is a perpetual sequence of sonorities that illuminate joyful and exuberant emotions. As a contrasting element, I have introduced a Romanian folk song “On the Freedom Plains” that expresses the feeling of liberation that I was looking to capture in this movement. I am drawn to the deeps roots of folk music and how it can temper my musical thoughts and open up the music to universal appeal. I chose a Romanian folk song in order to pay homage to my two oldest sons whose mother’s linage includes Romanian ancestors.
Movement II. Deliquesce The second movement is a simple song-like narrative that speaks in short rhythmic open phrases. The music progression in variation form. All the while, a spinning thread of notes orbits this narrative, eventually cascading into a perpetual motif that ends suspended in space.
