It was first performed on Christmas Eve with guitar accompaniment after the church organ broke down. The simple carol spread throughout Europe in the 19th century and was most famously translated into English by John Young in 1859, later becoming one of the most recorded Christmas songs in history. Notable recordings that helped cement its place in popular culture include Bing Crosby’s classic 1942 single, Mahalia Jackson’s powerful gospel rendition on Silent Night: Songs for Christmas (1950), and Simon & Garfunkel’s poignant use of the carol as a call for peace during the Vietnam War on Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme (1966). In 2011, “Silent Night” was added by UNESCO to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Its enduring appeal lies in its gentle melody and message of peace, making it a universal symbol of Christmas that transcends denominational and cultural boundaries.
