Night Haze is an original composition inspired by a hazy, rainy evening, on a porch in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. It is heavily inspired by Noir movie/game soundtracks, as well as works by Henry Mancini such as "Pink Panther." The song begins with an easy full band opening, then quickly switches to a Tenor 1 feature on the melody. Tenor 1 is encouraged to take some liberties with the melody and use plenty of subtone for the titular 'hazy' sound. After a short tutti section, Tenor 1 has solo space for a repeat of the form while supported by the band. After the tenor solo, the energy drops low with a bass trombone and bari sax soli (pun intended), with the bass playing a long tone heavy bassline and the drums restricted to hi hats. This is followed by a full band tutti section ihodgesn a medium, relaxed registered, followed by sax soli meant to mimic the playing of the Duke Ellington Orchestra (a la Johnny Hodges). The band then builds into the explosive climax of the song, which backs off a little when the saxes take the lead but overall maintains the energy until hitting the rubato section where Tenor 1 takes back over the melody. Tenor 1 should take the lead of the rubato section, and should effectively lead and cue the saxes with their pads and their entrance in the double time section. The song ends with two sustained chords to let Tenor 1 and Drums to let loose, split up by an open drum solo in between. This composition is intended for an advanced jazz ensemble due to its length, register, and sound concept. All trombones will need a bucket mute, all trumpets need both a stemless harmon mute and cup mute, and trumpet 4 will breifly switch to flugelhorn. Lead Trumpet goes up to high concert D, with an optional F# above that, and lead trombone goes up to high B. If you have an advanced ensemble and a desire for a classic jazz-noir sound, then this arrangment may just be for you!
