Who does not know within his heart the beautiful song of the Blessed Virgin, the Magnificat? It was she who, upon learning through the Angel Gabriel of the miraculous conception of the Child Jesus—the promised Christ—intoned that most sweet hymn of thanksgiving. It greatly gladdens the heart to sing this canticle at Vespers, and this I say from my own experience.
For a long time I had desired to compose a work worthy to bear these sacred words, yet I lacked the musical language to accomplish it. Thanks be to the good LORD, inspiration finally came to me to write these melodies. I must admit, to a certain extent, that this work differs somewhat from my usual style, though this was done intentionally.
At my parish, I was introduced to the works of Herbert Howells, whose harmony—though at first it startled me—soon deeply enchanted me. Naturally, I wished to write something inspired by his distinctive manner of composition; through listening to his music so often, I have come to regard him as a giant in his field. Thus, I follow a proverb as my own: to stand upon the shoulders of giants.
I have found great delight in the music I conceived here, though naturally I may be partial in saying so. I now leave it to you to judge and—should it be according to the Divine Will—to approve this piece as worthy of its most august text.
