Originally recorded in 1928, the composition was controversial at the time for incorporating harmonies and rhythms that critics associated with jazz, but today it is celebrated as an instrumental masterpiece that solidified the canon of Brazilian choro. It was released by the Orquestra Típica Pixinguinha-Donga. The original record was released by the Parlophon label and contained labeling errors: the choro's name was written in the singular ("Lamento") and credited a singer, although the track was purely instrumental. Although the first record label released it as "Lamento," all of the author's more than 100 original manuscripts use the plural form, "Lamentos." Critic Cruz Cordeiro slammed the composition in Revista Phono-Arte, stating that it suffered from "the influence of melodies and even rhythms of North American music." Time has proven that this fusion was, in fact, a brilliant innovation. Later, the song gained a famous version with lyrics written by Vinicius de Moraes.
