The traditional Armenian song, Khun Dzorin Dzar (The Apple Tree), was recorded by the Nor-Ike Orchestra featuring Souren Baronian on clarinet. The instrumental melody is in 10/8 meter. A keyboard player could easily add a left hand ostinato figure, notated as an open A minor arpeggiated figure (see first 2 measures).
Born to Armenian parents in 1930 in Harlem, NYC, Souren Baronian displays his musicianship by composing and playing instruments including clarinet, soprano sax, duduk, kaval, and percussion. His unique eclectic style spans Middle Eastern, Latin, and Balkan music, while fusing jazz with these genres.
