This song is inspired by the southernmost inhabited barrier island in Louisiana: Grand Isle. I wrote this song to capture the bittersweet family memories I have on the island contrasted by the grief of my family's presence being greatly diminished and mostly being relegated to my memories. As for the arrangement itself, Island of Fading Memories is a relaxed Bossa Nova tune that leans into 'island' soundscape. An auxillary percussion part is included, using a shaker and conga/ bongo to add to this asthetic. There is a trumpet section unison part on the melody where flugelhorn is highly recommended, but playing in stand may soften the sound enough to warm up the trumpet section's lower register in the passage. The arrangment does not have many difficulty spikes, except for the sax soli and shout chorus following it. There is solo space for Trombone 2 and Bari Sax, however solo sheets in C, Bb, and Eb are included if the director wishes to have other solists play instead. Lead trumpet goes up to high C# (concert B) and lead trombone goes up to high Bb, however both parts stay well below these limits for the majority of the song. This arrangment is a great choice for a laid back bossa nova in your setlist, as well as an excellent opportunity to give solos to musicians who's parts rarely get them.
