While the tune "Red River Valley" itself is known by several different titles and there are a number of versions of the lyrics, it is certainly one of the most beautiful American folk songs. The lyrics Kelly Via has chosen to work with in this Fantasia on Red River Valley are perhaps the most poignant, the text of each verse inspiring the musical setting. The bass and alto flutes at the beginning and end of the piece represent the heartbroken cowboy as he learns that his love is leaving, while the sound of the wind adds to his feelings of loneliness and despair. By the fourth verse, his pain and frustration gives way to a gentle remembrance of the love they once shared.

Awe-inspiring Setting
Kelly Via's arrangement of this beloved North American folk song is truly a masterpiece. The score itself is a work of art as motifs work their way upward and downward through the voicing. The only thing better than listening to the leaves rustling through the ensemble & the melody drifting upward from the harmony flutes is actually performing this piece... with the most genuine, humble, and gifted composer and flute teacher you could ever hope to meet! My students and I were richly blessed to have Mr. Via and his Mercer students at our flute festival. When I first heard his Korean Folk Song Suite, I could not imagine a more lovely choir piece... until I discovered the Mercer University Flute Choir's Spring Program (2109) on YouTube. Kelly Via's knowledge and understanding of the historical context and storytelling nature of the folk song tradition is artfully embedded in his works. Please share the forward with your choir & audience. They will love this piece as much as we do!
