The Austrian “Zapfenstreich” is a traditional military ceremony that combines music, ritual, and pageantry. Its roots go back to the early modern armies of Europe, when a signal was given at night to mark the end of the day in camp – telling soldiers to put out their fires, stop drinking, and return to their quarters. Today in Austria, the Zapfenstreich is no longer just a practical signal but a highly ceremonial event, performed by military bands and troops in full dress uniform. It often takes place on special national occasions, state visits, or military anniversaries. The ceremony usually begins with a parade of soldiers, followed by a sequence of marches and traditional pieces performed by a military band. A solemn highlight is the performance of the “Großer Österreichischer Zapfenstreich” (“Grand Austrian Tattoo”), a musical arrangement that blends fanfares, hymns, and patriotic melodies. The event concludes with the Austrian national anthem.
