I heard Vincent Beer-Demander during a concert with Vladimir Cosma, and I noticed his great virtuosity on the mandolin, an instrument I have often used in my musical life, with some arrangements for Julien Clerc or in the film Cyrano de Bergerac. I was therefore familiar with the instrument, and when Vincent asked me if I would write a concerto for mandolin and orchestra, the idea appealed to me. Vincent is a brilliant instrumentalist, and I wanted to showcase and highlight his talent. My inspiration is rooted in this concept. The strings accompany the mandolin here, which works very well together. History proves it with the concertos of great composers, and I continue in this tradition.
The concerto begins with a very fast tempo and a dialogue between the orchestra and the mandolin. The second movement, slower, showcases the melodic side of the mandolin with great sensitivity. In the third movement, we return to a fast tempo, with virtuosity and a dialogue with the orchestra. There is also a very expressive fugue from the orchestra. These three sections flow seamlessly into each other, and the work lasts a good ten minutes.

«J’ai entendu Vincent Beer-Demander lors d’un concert avec Vladimir Cosma et j’ai constaté sa grande virtuosité à la mandoline, instrument que j’ai souvent utilisé dans ma vie musicale avec certains arrangements de Julien Clerc, ou dans le film Cyrano de Bergerac. Je connaissais donc l’instrument et quand Vincent m’a demandé si j’acceptais d’écrire un concerto pour mandoline et orchestre, l’idée m’a séduite. Vincent est un brillant instrumentiste et j’ai voulu faire voir et entendre son talent. Mon inspiration se situe dans ce concept-là. Les cordes accompagnent ici la mandoline qui vont très bien ensemble. L’histoire le prouve avec les concertos de grands compositeurs et je continue dans cette filiation.
Le Concerto débute avec un tempo très rapide et un dialogue entre l’orchestre et la mandoline. Le deuxième mouvement, plus lent, expose le côté mélodique de la mandoline avec beaucoup de sensibilité. Dans le 3e mouvement on revient à un tempo rapide, avec de la virtuosité et un dialogue avec l’orchestre. Il y a aussi une fugue très expressive de l’orchestre. Ces trois parties s’enchaînent et l’oeuvre fait une bonne dizaine de minutes.»
