Concerto for Piano No. 1 in B-flat, Op. 23 (final version, 1890) by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky Concert Band - Sheet Music

By Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) wrote one of his most well-known works, CONCERTO FOR PIANO No. 1 in B-flat, Op. 23, between November 1874 and February 1875, and this initial version of the work premiered on October 25, 1875, in Boston, with Hans von Bülow at the piano under the baton of Benjamin Johnson Lang. Following a rocky, but generally positive, reception both in the United States and subsequently in Russia, Tchaikovsky happily took the advice given by German pianist Edward Dannreuther in 1876 on how to improve the piano writing, and more advice was offered by Russian pianist Alexander Siloti, all of which resulted in a new edition published in 1879. Among the changes instituted was the replacement of rolled chords at the beginning of the first movement to solid chords. A few small revisions a decade later resulted in the final version, which premiered on January 20, 1888, by the Philharmonic Society in Hamburg, with Vasily Sapelnikov at the piano and the composer conducting. This final edition was published in 1890. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set) [Solo Piano]. Study score.
