The tune of the Battle Hymn of the Republic took several forms and had many sets of lyrics before Julia Ward Howe wrote the ones with which we are familiar in 1861. The music was already popular among the troops of the Civil War and this new text turned it into one of the most familiar and popular hymns across the nation. This arrangement seeks to honor the march and fanfare feel of the original while using more modern harmonic and rhythmic ideas. Each verse has its own style adding variety, excitement, and anticipation for the glorious ending!
