Originally composed as an choral prelude for a church service, this short a cappella work is based on the American hymn tune BEACH SPRING. The text draws from Psalm 63 and Isaiah 55. The first eight measures expand from unison to an SATB chorale, evoking imagery of a sunrise. In the second half, the pentatonic melody is used to weave short, accessible moments of polyphony, coming back together in rhythmic unison at the end of each phrase.
In the Roman Catholic lectionary, Psalm 63 is proclaimed:
- Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A
- Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C
- Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A
- Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A
Isaiah 55 is proclaimed:
- Sunday after Epiphany: Baptism of the Lord, Year B
- Easter Vigil
